5 Apps to Keep Your Data Secure

Virtru, Confide, Wickr, Wiper, and Protonmail help protect your privacy

What happens on the Internet, stays on the Internet—and hackers are always looking for ways to steal that info. But don’t freak out: these five apps will help you lock down your data.

OPEN: Hi! I’m Charlie Kaplan, and this is Netted Does.

INTRO: Did you hear that? No? Maybe I’m just being paranoid. There are a million ways people on the internet can snoop on your private data, steal your identity, watch you sleep… the list goes on. Heck, I might be being recorded right now. Thankfully, there are also a number of trustworthy solutions for protecting your data and privacy.

VirtruLet’s start with that all-too-often compromised medium: email. If you want to send emails safely without giving up your current address, you’ll be interested in Virtru. This chrome extension encrypts your emails and makes recipients verify their identities to read.

ProtonmailIf you want to take email to the next level, get on Protonmail. This is a email provider, like Gmail or Yahoo, with the big difference being that it’s totally anonymous and nobody can view your data for any purpose, advertising or otherwise. It’s also practically a vault. You think I’m joking, but their datacenter is actually in a granite mountain in Switzerland.

Confide and WickrIf you’re worried about your texts, you’ve got two big options: Confide and Wickr. With Confide, you can delete any text you’ve sent through the service whenever you like, and your recipient can only read it by swiping over, making screenshotting tough, if not impossible. And Wickr… Wickr is just insane. It’s encrypted, re-encrypted, and re-re-encrypted. They don’t know the word overkill.

Wiper: As for your calls, check out Wiper. Not only can you use this app to securely call anyone without being tapped, you can also use it to test and send Bitcoin (obviously), too.

OUTRO: I think that should do it. Oh! And a tin foil hat. You’ll need that too. End transmission.
