Breaking up is hard to do. And with the advent of constant social networking, denying the existence of an old flame is no easy task either these days.

Put your past behind you with Ex-blocker, a browser plug-in that allows you to block your former significant other’s online activity, allowing you to move on without digital reminders.

Start by selecting your browser (Firefox, Chrome, Safari and IE are all supported) and filling in your former lover’s name, Twitter handle and Facebook page info. Then click to download and install the plug-in to your browser.

From then on, any information posted by your ex will be blocked from you with a splash warning whenever you’re about to “accidentally” come across news regarding that special someone from your past.

And, should you ever back slide, unblocking takes just a few clicks. Those with a habit of serial dating miscues will appreciate the capability to add up to five exes at once.

Unfortunately, it won’t get all your stuff back from that person’s apartment.

For disorganized chefs, there’s Plummelo, a website that allows you to easily store recipes, plan when you’ll prepare them and, best of all, automatically create a shopping list for all the ingredients.

Sign up for a free account and install the Plummelo browser button. When you find a recipe you’d like to save, click the button to store it (most sites are supported, including Epicurious, AllRecipes and FoodNetwork.com).

Once you’re ready to start cooking, just drag and drop recipes onto the scheduling calendar (it’s perfect when planning ahead for dinner parties and holiday meals).

Plummelo creates a grocery list for you and even groups items together, making your grocery experience more efficient.

There is now one less excuse for you to have your extended family over for dinner.

There’s nothing worse than send regret–that sense of remorse you have following the dispersal of an aggressive, desperate or alcohol inspired email.

To make sure you don’t say the wrong thing, there’s ToneCheck, a program that scans your emails for various signs of aggression (or stupidity), allowing you to soften your message before you piss off the recipient.

Start by downloading and installing the free software (Outlook is supported). From that point on, whenever you want to run a scan, just click the ToneCheck button in your message toolbar.

You can make edits and correct your tone within the interface.

And if you’re the type to send late night emails to bosses, exes or potential mates after a night on the town, consider activating Gmail’s Mail Goggles feature.

Once switched on (you find it in the Labs tab of your Gmail settings), Googles will require you to quickly solve a few simple math equations before sending a message. If doing the math proves tricky you’re probably not in the best state of mind for email communications.

Think of it as border control for bad email behavior.

Ever blind cc’ed somebody on an email, only to have them write back to you confused as to why you included them? If you’ve ever held a job, the answer has to be “yes!”

To add a layer of needed context to your emails, there’s Subtextual, which allows you to send private messages to bcc recipients of your emails.

Just download and install the free program (Microsoft Outlook and Gmail are supported) or try their brand new premium offering for $6.99, which allows you to include attachments and add a customized default message.

From that point on, just click on the Subtextual bar on the bottom of your email whenever you’d like to attach a private message to the folks you’re secretly including.

It’s like adding a private sticky note or cover sheet to your email messages (and your recipients don’t need to have the software installed to view your message).

As an added bonus, there are several functions that make using Twitter easier than ever, allowing you to quickly add username for “@” replies, shorten URLs and instantly send somebody a direct message.

If only there were a way to rectify those horrific accidental “reply all” disasters.

As is the case with all technology, email is both a blessing and a curse.

To escape the daily deluge of emails, there’s Away Find, a service that uses personalized filters to scan your inbox for urgent messages and then alert you via SMS, instant message or phone call.

To start, create a free account. Then create filters for the emails that you want to be notified about (like your boss, or your bookie). You can choose to be alerted by text, instant message, or Twitter direct message.

This way you don’t actually have to even check your email to get your important messages.

As an added time saver, Away Find will call and read your urgent emails aloud to you, so you won’t miss an important message when you’re away from a computer.

If you’re headed on vacation, you can use the filters to delegate emails to other people. The filters can be set for a period of time and recipients can opt out of away notifications, so they won’t be spammed every time they email you.

Next to sunblock and a sixpack it’s the next best thing to take to the beach this summer.

Not that this ever happens to you, but there are people out there who occasionally misplace their cell phones.

For the forgetful, the hungover and those with toddlers who hide things, there’s Where’sMyCellPhone, a simple but helpful free service that dials your phone, allowing you to find it.

Why do you need it? Because you can’t always find an extra phone to call yourself with (many don’t even have landlines anymore).

Just go to the site, enter your cell number and then hit the “make it ring” button. When you hear a ringing sound, move toward it. Recovery is often mere footsteps away.

And for those who never remember the anniversary of the births of their loved ones, try the Birthday Dialer, which lets you send a specialized birthday song.

The service is gratis though they do offer an upgrade that is ad-free and allows you to pre-schedule the greetings in advance.

Gliider also uses your information and materials to suggest deals on flights and hotels relevant to your search.

Unfortunately, packing for your trip is still your responsibility.

If you’re anything like us, the mess of bookmarks, sticky notes, and clipped web pages is so confusing that you’re just a step away from reverting back to post-its.

To make things a bit more streamlined, try Diigo, a free service that combines bookmarking, web clipping, and annotation tools.

To begin, create a free account with Diigo and download the toolbar (it works with every major browser).

The toolbar allows you to bookmark pages, highlight text, send articles via a bevy of social networking tools, and mark items for later reading.

(Diigo even allows you to capture pages as fully searchable screenshots, so you can archive a page and view it offline.)

After you’ve made any changes, Diigo pushes that information to their servers, or “the cloud.” You don’t have to worry about setting up separate syncs for different types of data since everything updates together at once.

The service also has apps for the iPad, iPhone, and for Android devices.

You are now free to annotate the entire Internet.

The Internet is full of great shortcuts and apps that make life easier. But sometimes having too many time savers can make things more complicated, not less.

Enter Quix, an application that allows you to run basic searches, complete various tasks and access all your bookmarks (across various browsers), all in one convenient place.

If that sounds a little nerdy, consider it the express lane on the Autobahn.

To load Quix just drag the bookmarklet to your bookmark bar. From that point on you’ll use the button to run actions by typing a prompt, whether it’s defining a word with Google, searching a Twitter username, sharing something on Facebook or searching Netflix for a movie.

Most commands are a single letter and are easy to memorize, although accessing the list is as easy as typing “help.” Quix has all of the major sites covered and eliminates the bookmark clutter that so often accumulates.

While there are plenty of advanced commands for the mavens, the majority of what this app can do is designed for the casual Internet user.

Your bookmarks need clutter control, and this the answer.

Being the recipient of a gift is dicey business. Unless the person knows you really well, chances are good the present will go astray.

Thankfully, there’s the Amazon Universal Registry, which allows you to create your own personal wish list in one convenient market place.

Simply create an Amazon account (if you haven’t already for some reason) and drag the “Add to Registry” button to your browser’s bookmark bar.

From then on, simply click the button whenever you’re viewing a product that you’d like.
You can add to your list from any site, not just Amazon.

While Amazon has dedicated sites for wedding and baby shower registries, the business of registering isn’t just for these occasions anymore (read: It’s okay for dudes to do it).

When you’re creating your list, simply click which specialized registry you’d like to create, enter your name and begin building your list. Amazon offers guides to suggest items you may never have known you needed.

Of course if you still want to risk letting friends and family freewheel it, that’s your perogative.
