A Farewell to Adverbs

Hemingway is a web and desktop app for writing like Ernest Hemingway

Want to write clear, effective prose blessed by Hemingway?

Well, you could await some mystical automobile ride to the past, like Owen Wilson in Midnight in Paris. But it’s easier to use Hemingway.

Like its namesake, Hemingway makes language tight, clear, and free of unnecessary complexity and obfuscation (like adverbs, passive voice, and words like “obfuscation”). The program is available on the Web or as a desktop client.

Brothers Andrew and Ben Long created Hemingway to keep writing bold and direct. (If you think your writing is flawless, note that the app even improved old Ernie’s work.) Use it to craft laser-focused emails, trim creative writing, or hone a term paper.

The bottom line is that by algorithmically codifying Hemingway’s writing style, this app helps you get to the point, which, as Ernest says, is to “put down on paper what I see and what I feel in the best and simplest way.”

Get it down.
